1. What We Accept

OpenMap Naija is for documenting Nigeria's civic infrastructure problems. We accept reports about:

  • Roads: Potholes, erosion, structural failure, construction defects
  • Drainage: Flooding, blocked channels, failed culverts
  • Streetlights: Broken, missing, or non-functional lighting
  • Waste: Overflowing bins, illegal dumping, missed collections
  • Water & Sanitation: Broken pipes, sewage issues, water supply failures
  • Public facilities: Damaged sidewalks, missing crosswalks, park deterioration

2. What We Don't Accept

  • Opinions:“The government doesn't care” — not a report
  • Completed repairs:If it's fixed, the record is already there
  • Political content: Campaign material, partisan attacks, electioneering
  • Baseless claims:Statements with no visual evidence — “this area always floods” without showing current flooding
  • Hate speech: Attacks on ethnic, religious, or political groups
  • Personal information: Names, phone numbers, or addresses of private individuals
  • Duplicates: If someone already reported the same issue, confirm it instead of creating a new report
  • Commercial content: Advertising, promotions, or business listings

3. Content Standards

All reports must meet these standards:

  • Factual: Describe what you observed, not what you think
  • Specific: Include location, time, and description of the issue
  • Original: Your own observation, not copied from someone else
  • Non-commercial: No promotional content or business references
  • Respectful: No personal attacks, harassment, or incitement

4. Moderation Process

Every report goes through review before becoming public:

  • Community review: Other users can confirm or dispute reports
  • Moderator review: Trained moderators check reports against our standards
  • AI detection: Automated checks for spam, hate speech, and duplicates
  • Agency review: Government agencies can confirm or dispute reports

5. Enforcement

Violations are handled progressively:

  • First offense: Report removed, warning issued
  • Second offense: Report removed, account suspended for 7 days
  • Third offense: Report removed, account permanently banned
  • Serious violations: Immediate permanent ban (hate speech, impersonation, harassment)

6. Appeals

If your report is rejected or your account is suspended, you can appeal by emailing openmapnaija@gmail.com. Include your report ID and why you believe the decision was incorrect. We review appeals within 7 days.
